Demographic changes are associated with a growing number of patients requiring periodontal treatment.
Adult patients frequently assess their dentition based on tooth alignment and the visibility of teeth during smiling or speaking. Even minor degrees of crowding or spacing may substantially influence self-perception, particularly in social and professional settings. Within a comprehensive treatment concept, dental practitioners may enhance periodontal health through tooth alignment and thereby contribute to the integration of oral health, general health, and well-being. Awareness of the long-term effects of orthodontic treatment on periodontal health is therefore of relevance from a public health and preventive care perspective.
